Chapter 11

Cormac had a ton of work to do on his ranch. He had just arranged to have his crops dusted, but it didn’t mean that there wasn’t a lot of work for him in preparing for it. And there were always fences to fix, paperwork to take care of, and things he wanted to do to try to expand his grazing and crops.

One man could only do so much, and he just had to chip away at things.

But today, today instead of going home and getting to work like he should, and without really thinking about it, he saddled up his horse and rode in the general direction of Smith and Abrielle’s place.

Smith was a good man, a friend, and also someone who had entered a marriage of convenience.

Cormac hadn’t really even thought about talking to him about that. Not until he was facing his own similar marriage.

He’d been watching, noticing, and it seemed like Smith and Abrielle were just as much in love as people who had dated for years.

Was that possible?

And if it was, Cormac wanted to know how Smith had done it. After all, he didn’t really want to enter into a marriage that was just a loveless union for the sole sake of making a home for a little girl. Even though he felt like that was a good idea, making a home, a permanent one, for Quinn. He felt that was the best idea, of course.

But if she had to live with parents who couldn’t stand each other or with parents who just barely got along, it couldn’t be good for her either.

It was clear, he knew that for a fact, in the Bible, that the man was the head of the home. The leader. The one who answered to God for the things that happened within the walls of his house.

He took the responsibility of answering to God very, very seriously.

And as the leader and the head, he felt like it was his job that if he wanted to have a relationship with his wife, he needed to work toward that end. And not expect her to... He didn’t even know what he expected.

The first thing he was going to have to do would be to talk to her about what happened all those years ago. He didn’t do anything, not on purpose. But whether she believed him or not remained to be seen.

Beyond that, he didn’t know how to go about developing the kind of relationship where there was affection and love and consideration, maybe passion. He wanted that. He didn’t know a man who didn’t. But he didn’t know how to get it.

Deuce would be a good person to talk to, but his friend had gone to Fargo for a couple of years, and he didn’t even bother riding over to his place, figuring he wouldn’t be there.

But he had recently gotten married, although his situation was different. Teagan had been his best friend forever, but somehow they figured out that there was more to their friendship.
